Jusuf Nurkic, the center of the Trail Blazers, was seriously injured in the leg at the end of the season, during the team's double victory against the Nets on Monday night. NBA players rallied to Nurkic's support on social media after the announcement of the terrible injury.
In the second half of 2:22, Nurkic jumped for a rebound and clumsily sat on the leg. An NBA referee seemed to graze slightly on Nurkic's foot. The star of the NBA immediately grabbed his leg and had to be removed from the ground.
The Blazers announced Tuesday morning that Nurkic had fractured left tibia and fibula. There is no time for his return to the basketball activity.
Graphic video of the injury showed coaches and incredulous players after the fall of Nurkic. Blazers coach Terry Stotts called it "devastating".
"It made my stomach ache," Blazers star goalie Damian Lillard told the press after the match. "As I was walking over there, I saw everyone else turning around quickly and moving away, then I looked at him and saw his leg."
Before the injury, Nurkic had scored 32 points and 16 rebounds, helping his team to claim their sixth consecutive playoff spot.
NBA players sent their best wishes to Nurkic on Twitter.
The injury echoed a injury similar to that of striker Paul George of Oklahoma City Thunder in 2015, when he had broken his leg. Dr. Robert Klapper, an orthopedic surgeon who has a show on ESPN Radio, explained in a series of tweets that Nurkic will probably come back stronger because of a callus that will form to heal the tibia fracture.
Nurkic was in the middle of the best season of his career. In 72 games this season, he averaged career highs of 15.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1 steal for 1.40. He ranks 15th in the NBA rebound and 16th overall.
