Women who say they have suffered breast implants gathered at a meeting of the Food and Drug Administration on Monday.
Some have complained of "breast implant disease", vague symptoms such as cerebral fog, rash, fatigue and joint pain.
At the FDA hearing, the primary focus of the FDA hearing is what doctors say is a definitive link between textured breast implants and a rare form of lymphoma called breast-implant-associated ALCL ".
It is a cancer of the immune system that develops in the scar tissue surrounding the implant.
In the United States, nearly 500 women have been diagnosed, either after reconstruction after mastectomy or cosmetic surgery. In the world, 17 patients died with an ALCL associated with a breast implant.
SLCL cases associated with a breast implant involved textured implants rather than smooth implants. About 12% of women with breast implants in the United States have textured implants.
The removal of scar tissue and the implant usually heals the cancer.
Plastic surgeons say implants are generally safe, but women should be informed of all potential risks.
"In the end, patients should be very comfortable with what they put in their own bodies," says Dr. Vu Nguyen.
At the meeting, breast implant manufacturers said that safety was their number one priority.
ALCL cases associated with breast implants usually occur eight to ten years after the first implantation of the woman.
