Experts warned that alcohol-induced brain damage continues for up to six weeks after quitting.
It is well known that excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages is not good for the brain, but until now, very little was known about how long it took to repair itself after becoming sober.
Drink the danger bigger than expected
Scientists in Alicante, Spain, and Mannheim, Germany, have now found that the brain is still damaged longer than expected. Their findings were published in JAMA Psychiatry.
They examined the brains of 90 volunteer patients housed in a rehabilitation unit in a German hospital.
With an average age of 46, patients had been hospitalized because of an alcohol problem.
The scientists compared their results with those of 36 men without alcohol problems.
Damage progresses with time
Dr. Santiago Canals, of the Institute of Neuroscience CSIC-UMH, who coordinated the research, said: "Until now, no one could believe that in the absence of Alcohol, the damage to the brain would progress. "
He stressed: "An important aspect of the work is that the group of patients participating in our research is hospitalized in a detoxification program and that its consumption of addictive substances is controlled, which ensures that they do not drink alcohol." 39; alcohol.
"Therefore, the phase of abstinence can be followed closely."
The damage observed during the sober period tended to affect the frontal region and the right hemisphere of the brain.
This goes against the popular belief that the damage starts to subside when people give up alcohol.
Scientists are now trying to really understand the extent of the damage in order to do more research on its magnitude at the very beginning of sobriety.
It is worth saying that this study is specifically concerned with alcoholics. We are not talking about the strange glass of wine here or there.
But it's always interesting to note that our brain may not recover as fast as we thought.
