QUINCY, Florida (WCTV) – Veterinarians at the Quincy Animal Hospital are warning pet owners after the positive test of a cat for rabies.

The cat was brought to the hospital earlier this week with symptoms of rabies.

Veterinarians euthanized the animal and alerted the health department. The tests confirmed that the cat had rabies.

On Thursday afternoon, the Ministry of Health issued a rabies alert for the central region of Gadsden County.

The rabies alert concerns an area located south of the I-10 at Quincy and includes Old Federal Road, north of Spooner Road, to Highway 268 and High. Bridge Road in the area west of the Joe Budd Wildlife Management Area.

The rabies alert will remain in effect for 60 days.

Officials at the veterinary hospital say this is the first confirmed case of rabies in Gadsden County for about five years.

Animal owners are advised to ensure that their vaccines are up-to-date with their rabies vaccines.
