A case of measles has been confirmed in Maryland and the authorities have informed some residents of Maryland that they may have been exposed.
The case seems to be the first reported in the Washington area in the midst of a national upsurge of this extremely contagious and sometimes fatal disease.
The Maryland Department of Health said anyone who could have been in an office building located at 4000 Old Court Rd. In Pikesville between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm Tuesday may have been exposed.
People who may have been exposed elsewhere were directly informed, said the health department.
The measles virus is easily transmitted to people who are not vaccinated with coughs, sneezes and oral secretions, officials said.
The Ministry of Health said people, especially unvaccinated people, who were at the Old Court Road address should monitor the first symptoms of measles, especially fever.
A case was confirmed last year in Maryland and involved trips abroad, officials said.
