KILLEEN, Texas A student of Killeen ISD, who died earlier this week after contracting a rare form of bacterial meningitis, remembers his family and friends across the country.

Demonte Deshannon, 8, wanted to be a firefighter to help others. Now the community gathers behind his family after his sudden death on Wednesday.

"The family needs your support during the mourning, when you share the Lucky 8 hashtag!" a GoFundMe page said.

Starting at 9 pm Friday, the GoFundMe page raised nearly $ 5,000, exceeding the initial target of $ 3,000.

Demonte's father, Robert, is a member of the Sigma Alpha Gamma Military Brotherhood. His fraternity brother, Kabir Tompkins, spoke to KWTX about Demonte and this tragic news.

"Hard to describe in real terms the impact it has had on people. You're talking about adult veterans, who went to war and came back, and it's like … I cried more since April 1 than I cried for the last 14 years and seven surgeries, "Tompkins said.

He also spoke about the brotherhood's projects to be in Killeen to support the Deshannons.

"God had a more ambitious plan for him – God wants him to guide others in the right way," Tompkins said.

Demonte, who was a student at Saegert Primary School, is survived by his mother, father and siblings.
