(April 5, 2019 / JNS) The Israeli spacecraft "Beresheet", entered into lunar orbit Thursday on its journey to the moon, is on an "excellent" trajectory, according to data collected last night by SpaceIL engineers and Israel Aerospace Industries in their control room in Yehud, Israel.
During its lunar orbit, "Beresheet" will be at its closest point to the moon 292 miles from the lunar surface and farthest from the moon at 6,462 miles.
The probe is expected to land on the moon on April 11.
"Beresheet", named after the first word and the first book of the Torah (meaning "early"), was launched at Cape Canaveral on February 22.
If it succeeds, it will be the first Israeli spacecraft to land on the moon, as well as the first private craft to do so.
