a mysterious epidemic of E. coli in five states. Seventy-two people have been infected so far, the agency said Friday.
The epidemic apparently began on March 2 and resulted in the hospitalization of eight people. Tennessee, Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky and Georgia reported cases of illness. Patients are 1 to 74 years old.
Generally, the symptoms of an E. coli infection appear three to four days after exposure to the bacteria and may include fever, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal cramps.
