A ban on preventing unvaccinated children from traveling to public places in a New York County has been canceled.
On Friday, a judge ruled that children in Rockland County who had not received their measles, mumps and rubella vaccine could be made public again. It was part of a countywide effort to combat a measles outbreak that spread to at least 150 people.
Rockland County had planned to prohibit anyone under the age of 18 who was not vaccinated from going to public places for a month or until they received a vaccine. The parents could also have been prosecuted for not having vaccinated their children.
"We owe this to the people of this great county, so we never have to relive that," said Ed Day, Rockland County Leader. "We must do everything in our power to stop this epidemic and protect the health of those who can not be vaccinated for medical reasons and those of children too young to be vaccinated."
New York is one of many states that allow parents to not vaccinate their children for personal or religious reasons, but lawmakers have recently proposed a bill to fill this gap.
