A solar eclipse will cover part of the United States in the dark for four minutes. Here is the path it will take.

Paducah, Kentucky, and Evansville, Indiana, could be good options for eclipse hunters looking for smaller, less congested cities that still offer a selection of flights. Of course, it will take more than four years before you can book, but it's never too early to start thinking.

The weather is the ultimate map, but you can maximize your chances of clear skies by respecting the climatology. The best part? The eclipse of 2024 will be better than that of August 2017. Why? Its duration will be longer by almost two minutes: four minutes and 28 seconds against two minutes and 41 seconds. The increase in duration is a symptom of two factors: the width of the shadow and the speed.

It's not just the amount of eclipse time that will be better in 2024 – the eclipse will be of better quality. It's because of its greater magnitude. Because the shadow of the moon will be larger, it will move the twilight closer to the horizon – leading to a darker sky overall. More stars and planets will be visible, and the temperature will be colder.

Solar eclipses are not uncommon, but seeing one is. Although a total solar eclipse occurs on Earth on average once every 18 months, seeing them is not always easy. They often occur over the ocean, isolated areas or places that require days of travel. If you were to stand still, you would see one every 375 years or so. The year 2024 is therefore a unique opportunity for those seeking to strike a point off their list.

The next total solar eclipse will take place on July 2nd in Argentina and Chile.
