Father accused of kidnapping his own baby arrested
The disappearance of the 10-month-old baby triggered an AMBER alert on February 10 late at night. The boy’s mother died trying to prevent the kidnapping.
PEORIA, Ariz. – Authorities say a 30-year-old man was arrested following the kidnapping of his 10-month-old son. Police said the boy’s mother died trying to stop the kidnapping.
Around 6:30 p.m. on February 9, Peoria police responded to a report of domestic violence near Deer Valley Road and 91st Avenue. Police said they learned the mother with custody was loading her baby into a van when the father got into the car and fled with the baby.
The baby, Abel Maes, was found early Wednesday morning near Interstate 17 and Bell Road. The suspect, identified by police as Eric Maes, 30 Sun City, was taken into custody, according to a statement made by Peoria police on the afternoon of February 10.
Mother dies trying to protect her baby
The mother, Brittany Walker, 30, of Phoenix, held the van as it drove down the road. She was thrown from the van and later taken to hospital where she died of her injuries.
“We were all hoping that nothing bad would happen, but I think his family deep down knew it wouldn’t be a 100% shock to us if anything happened, he would do it to him because we know its story, ”said Juliann Davis.
On February 10, Walker’s relatives remember Walker’s life.
“All she wanted to be was a mom and a good mom,” Davis said. “She was so scared of what was going to happen to her baby.”
Relatives say there has been a history of domestic violence in Walker’s relationship with Maes.
“We’re like OK, that’s another issue with Eric,” Davis said sobbing. “I hope this time, now that he’s kidnapped a child, they’ll put him away even longer and she’ll be good, but that hasn’t happened.”
Maes, according to Martie’s parent, was just released from a drug rehab center earlier this week.
“He has to stand up and take responsibility for what he has done,” Davis said. “Brittany gave him the chance and the chance and the chance to improve and improve his life, and he didn’t. We just want him in custody to make sure that he doesn’t do that to anyone else. “
