A case of rabies discovered in Marion County

REDDICK, Fla. (WCJB) – There is a rabies warning in Marion County.

A case of rabies was discovered in the Reddick area after a dog was bitten by a rabid raccoon and contracted rabies.

The virus is most commonly found in raccoons, bats, foxes and stray cats in Florida.

Health officials ask residents to take precautions.

"Residents who live in the area should avoid any contact with stray animals or wild animals, they must ensure that their pets are vaccinated against rabies if they are not already vaccinated, and of course they owe their pets and their children when they are outside. "
