ULAANBAATAR, Mongolia (WLNS) – A Mongol couple died from bubonic plague after eating raw rodent meat and kidneys.

The couple ate groundhog, similar to a marmot.

In the remote Bayan-Ölgii province, bordering China and Russia, raw marmot meat would be beneficial for health.

According to the CDC, bubonic plague can be transmitted by fleas and infected animals, such as prairie dogs, squirrels, rats and rabbits.

The disease required the six-day quarantine of 118 people in contact with the couple.

The local governor said that no other cases had been reported in the area.
