BALTIMORE, MD (WJZ / CNN) – New application of drone technology could save many lives

The University of Maryland School of Medicine has partnered with the School of Engineering to successfully deliver a kidney to surgeons using a drone.

From West Baltimore, a drone carrying a human organ was launched. He landed 4 km from the Medical Center of the University of Maryland.

The kidney was then grafted successfully to a patient, saving her life.

This first trip of its kind could revolutionize the process of organ transplantation.

"This will have a direct impact on improving outcomes for patients when the weather is critical," said Dr. E. Albert Reece, Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

When performing an organ transplant, it is often difficult to determine how to transmit it quickly to the recipient. Any delay can destroy the viability of the organ.

"The system is down and needs to be repaired. It takes too much time, it is dangerous and it is way too expensive, "said Dr. Joseph Scalea, assistant professor of surgery.

The new technology has the potential to make it cheaper, faster and more reliable.

It could also expand the pool of donor organs and improve access for people in rural communities.

"Medicine has become the abandonment of all these beautiful innovations that await us. We can implement them to improve the care of the system. It's time to adapt, "Scalea said.

The University of Maryland is collaborating with three organ procurement organizations across the country in order to gradually start implementing the use of drones.
