Beirut, Lebanon – A fire broke out in a fuel storage tank at the Zahrani oil installation in Lebanon.
Lebanese TV channel Al Jadeed first reported the news, saying on Monday that a loud sound resembling an explosion was also heard.

Translation: A big fire broke out in the Zahrani oil installation in southern Lebanon
A spokesperson for the Lebanese army told Al Jazeera that the fuel tank contained benzene.
“We are now focusing on evacuating residents from the area as we try to put out the blaze,” the official said. “The priority now is not to prevent fire from reaching other tanks.”
At the end of September, a ship unloaded 16,000 tonnes of Iraqi fuel at the Zahrani plant. This was the first shipment of an exchange agreement between Beirut and Baghdad.
In March, then Prime Minister Hasan Diab said experts found hazardous materials at the Zahrani facility.
Monday’s fire comes just over a year after the massive explosion in the port of Beirut that left more than 200 dead, injured thousands and destroyed neighborhoods neighboring the capital.
