A high school student from Florida committed suicide Wednesday morning in the auditorium of his school after asking for permission to use the restroom, announced officials.

The younger 17-year-old, who was not identified, reportedly asked her high school teacher at Lake Mary High School, near Orlando, if she could excuse going to the nearby washroom. from 7:45 am About five minutes later she heard a bullet coming from the auditorium.

The school was briefly placed on a pen that has since been lifted, and students were allowed to return home during the day after the news of the incident spread, reported WESH.

The Seminole County Sheriff, Dennis Lemma, said at a press conference that there were no staff members or students in the auditorium at the time of the shooting. After hearing the shot, the school nurse tried to resuscitate the young woman. It is unclear how the student had access to the handgun.

The victims' advocates reportedly informed the girl's father and were trying to get in touch with her mother, who lives outside the state of Florida.

The investigators are now trying to find out how she was able to get the gun and take it to school.

Lemma highlighted the community's mental health resources and encouraged people with depressive or suicidal thoughts to come into contact.

"What a horrible tragedy," he said, according to My13 News. "We want to remind the public of the signs of depression … there are services, love, guidance and faith."
