(Meredith) – An Atlanta high school warns parents that students are brewing their coffee with vanilla extract, which seems to catch a buzz before school.
Grady High School posted this review on its Facebook page, claiming that children buy "a pure extract of bourbon vanilla", which contains 35% alcohol.
School officials said students bought the ingredient from a bakery at a nearby grocery store and mixed it with milk before they went to school. In one case, a student had to go to the emergency room after drinking the spiked coffee, reported the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper.
According to the National Poison Control Center, the vanilla extract contains ethanol, the same type of alcohol that is found in beer, wine and spirits.
"The amount of extract requested in the recipes would not be dangerous," said the agency. "But a child who has swallowed the contents of a bottle may be at risk of alcohol poisoning."
It is unclear how many Grady students drank the extract, but the school informed the parents that it was simply "another thing to watch for."
