PORTLAND, Maine (AP) – A Maine astronaut will be the first woman and the third person in the state to travel in space.

Jessica Meir of Caribou will make her first trip to the International Space Station on Wednesday from the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, according to NASA.

Meir must launch with a Russian cosmonaut and an astronaut from the United Arab Emirates. It will come back in 2020.

Flight engineer and co-pilot of the Soyuz MS-15 spacecraft, Meir said that she wanted to become an astronaut from the age of 5 and hopes to have the opportunity to participate in an outing in space.

According to the Portland Press Herald, Meir will work on experiments ranging from studying the effects of gravity on the human body to the growth of protein crystals to the effect of radiation on humans.
