An asteroid will dangerously graze the Earth this weekend.

Called 2000 QW7, the space rock ranges between 290 and 650 meters wide, which is almost as big as Dubai's Burj Khalifa.

Fortunately, it will be about five million kilometers from Earth when it passes on September 14, although NASA still considers it "close".

Although it is extremely improbable that the object collides with our planet, the ANU astrophysicist, Brad Tucker, explained what would happen if this occurred.

"It would not destroy the Earth, but it could destroy a big city in one go," he told Kochie.

"It would release energy from tons of nuclear bombs and create a crater 100 km wide."

"That's why we worry about these things, and there are a lot of them there."
