It was to die for! Social media is illuminating with hundreds of comments, photos and videos after a very bright meteor (known as a fireball) illuminated the night sky of northern Florida.
The fireball fell from the sky near Perry, FL, in Taylor County, at about 23:52 EDT, according to data provided by the National Weather Service in Tallahassee. The fireball could be seen hundreds of kilometers away, including Gainesville. Reports of sightings are coming from all over Florida and as far as Alabama and Georgia. Tweets sent to the National Weather Service indicate that people in Taylor County have heard a loud sound of the fireball.
The location of this fireball was discovered by a meteorological satellite product used to track lightning in stormy weather. Lightning geostationary mapping (GLM) data on the GOES-16 weather satellite was collected on the bright meteorological Taylor County. Like lightning, fireballs are also very bright, which is why GLM products can capture them.
The luminous meteors are only visible for a few seconds because of their high speed.
Sunday morning, we do not know if space rock hit the ground or broke in the atmosphere before the impact.
