GUILDERLAND, N.Y. (NEWS10) – Two people tested positive for the bacteria that caused Legionnaires' disease.

Officials say that one of these people has passed away.

The Albany County Health Department had linked the two cases to the Promenade Assisted Living facility on Western Avenue in Guilderland.

According to officials, water samples taken from the facility were also tested positive for Legionella.

Legionella is spread by the inhalation of small water droplets containing the bacteria, which usually occurs when the water is aerosolized, such as in showers, fountains or spas. It is not transmitted from person to person. This can lead to serious illness, including pneumonia, especially in the elderly, weakened immune systems or with a history of respiratory problems.

The New York Department of Health has launched an environmental investigation.
