WASHINGTON (FOX 5 DC) – The nation will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11 from Tuesday – but D.C. has got a glimpse of what to expect to celebrate the start of the historic trip to the moon.
The FOX 5 cameras captured an impressive rehearsal along the National Mall early Monday morning when an image of a 363-foot normal-sized Saturn V rocket was projected onto the Washington Monument.
For three nights, July 16, 17 and 18 – the Smithsonian's National Air and Space Museum will project the image of the rocket on the east face of the monument from 9:30 pm. at 11:30 pm On Friday, July 19 and Saturday, July 20, a special 17-minute show entitled "Apollo 50: Storming the Moon" will feature full-motion cartographic projection artwork on the monument. Archive images will be shown to recreate the launch of Apollo 11 and tell the story of the first landing on the moon.
You can experience "Apollo 50: Go for the Moon" on July 19 and 20 from the viewing areas located in the National Mall, opposite the Smithsonian Castle, between the ninth and twelfth streets. The presentation will include a full sound, projection screens and a reenactment of the famous Kennedy Space Center countdown, a width of 20 meters. The free show will be presented three times on two evenings: from 9:30 pm to 10:30 pm and 11:30 pm
