A Florida woman who claimed to be a psychic psychic was sentenced to more than three years in prison for swindling a $ 1.6 million Texas woman to raise a curse against her and her family.
Sherry Tina Uwanawich, who is also passing by Jacqueline Miller, met the unidentified victim for the first time in 2007 while she was living in Houston, federal prosecutors said Monday in a press release.

Uwanawich, 28, became the woman's confidante and used her confidence to convince her that her family was in supernatural trouble, the statement said.

The victim, a medical student, suffered from depression after her mother's death, the New York Times reported. Uwanawich allegedly attributed the death of his mother to a witch curse.
Bob Nygaard, a retired police officer from New York and a private investigator on psychic fraud, told reporters that trust-based crimes that exploit a victim's fears are common across the country.

"Do not despise the victim," he said. "Credits the con."
The fictional fortune teller said that she needed "big money" to buy crystal balls, candles and other objects for meditation ceremonies in order to lift the torch, prosecutors said. The victim was led to believe that if she did not pay, she was at risk of harm.

The project lasted for years even after Uwanawich's move to South Florida, investigators said. The scheme ended in 2014 after Uwanaich told the woman that she had invented the curse.
Uwanawich had previously pleaded guilty to wire fraud and was sentenced in Miami last week, more than ten years after the start of the ploy, the statement said. She must also pay restitution.
