The United States is made up of 3,143 counties or county equivalents. Among them, Clallam County, in northwest Washington, has the longest record of consistently voting for the winning presidential candidate.
Since 1980, County Clallam has voted in every presidential election for the candidate who would win the White House. Since 1920, he only voted for the losing candidate in 1968 and 1976. Political scientists have a term for counties or states that anticipate how the rest of the country will vote – barometers.
Prior to the 2020 election, Clallam was one of 19 counties with an unbroken record of votes for the winning presidential candidate since 1980. These counties were:
- Warren County, Illinois.
- Vigo County, Ind.
- Bremer County, Iowa
- Washington County, Maine
- Shiawassee County, Michigan.
- Van Buren County, Michigan.
- Hidalgo County, New Mexico
- Valencia County, New Mexico
- Cortland County, New York
- Otsego County, New York
- Ottawa County, Ohio
- Wood County, Ohio
- Essex County, Vermont.
- Westmoreland County, Virginia.
- Juneau County, Wisconsin.
- Marquette County, Wisconsin.
- Richland County, Wisconsin.
- Sawyer County, Wisconsin.
Until the 2020 election, Valencia County, New Mexico held the record for the longest selection streak for the winning presidential candidate, dating back to 1952. Vigo County, Indiana began to select the winning presidential candidate in 1956. Ottawa County, Ohio, Westmoreland County, Virginia, Juneau County, Wisconsin, and Sawyer County, Wisconsin, began their streak in 1964.
Clallam County is holding municipal elections in its three cities – Port Angeles, Sequim and Forks – in 2021. Twenty-six offices are up for election in those cities.
