Illinois’ 11 health care regions are currently operating under Level 3 coronavirus mitigation rules, but some regions are trending in the right direction for those rules to be relaxed in the coming weeks.
Here’s where things stand in Illinois as of Friday (note: positivity rates have a three-day lag in the data, meaning the latest information in this statistic is as of Monday):
Region 1 (Northwestern Illinois):
Bed availability in that region was 24% on Thursday, while the availability of intensive care beds was 25%. New hospitalizations are down overall, as is the region’s positivity rate, which has fallen to 15.2%.
Region 2 (West Central Illinois):
The positivity rate stood at 13.7% Thursday, but the availability of hospital beds was 24% while the availability of ICU beds was 19.5%, the latter below the 20% threshold after declines on each of the last three days.
The region is also seeing a slow increase in new hospitalizations linked to the virus.
Region 3 (western Illinois):
Hospitalizations are on the rise in that region, but positivity rates are down, falling to 11.9% on Thursday. The availability of ICU beds remains very low at 14.8%, but the availability of hospital beds has increased to 26.9%, reversing a recent downward trend.
Region 4 (southwest Illinois):
This region has seen the number of hospitalizations increase in nine of the last 10 days, and the availability of their hospital beds has been below 20% for 10 consecutive days. Critical care availability was 16.9% on Thursday, while overall bed availability was 13.4%. The region’s positivity rate has recently declined to 13.6%.
Region 5 (Southeast Illinois):
The positivity rate in that region rose slightly to 12.6% on Thursday, and the availability of ICU beds continued its worrying decline, falling to 13.7% on Thursday. The region has also seen its hospitalizations increase in each of the past 11 days.
Region 6: (Eastern Illinois):
Perhaps the closest region to reducing Level 3 mitigation measures, this region, which includes Champaign County, is well above the 20% threshold of available hospital and intensive care beds. , and experienced six consecutive days of decreased hospitalizations overall.

Region 7 (Will, Kankakee counties):
