PROVIDENCE, R.I – The ecstatic sailor depicted kissing a woman in Times Square celebrating the end of World War II passed away on Sunday. George Mendonsa was 95 years old.
Mendonsa fell and had a crisis in Middletown, Rhode Island, where he lived with his wife for 70 years, said his daughter, Sharon Molleur, to The Providence Journal.
Mendonsa was shown to ship Greta Zimmer Friedman, a dental assistant in nurse uniform, on August 14, 1945. Known as VJ Day, it was the day Japan went to in the USA. People have flocked to the streets of New York to celebrate the news.
Mendonsa kissed Friedman, whom he had never met.
The photo of Alfred Eisenstaedt was first published in Life magazine and became one of the most famous photographs of the twentieth century. This is what is called "V-J Day in Times Square", but the best known is "The Kiss".
Several people then claimed to be the couple who kissed each other. It was several years before Mendonsa and Friedman were confirmed.
Mendonsa served on a destroyer during the war and was on leave when the end of the war was announced. He said Friedman had reminded him of nurses on a hospital ship he had seen treating injured sailors.
Mendonsa died two days before his 96th birthday. The family has not yet arranged the funeral.
Friedman fled Austria during the war while he was 15 years old. She died in 2016, at the age of 92, in a hospital in Richmond, Virginia, from complications related to aging.
