A barista asked several police officers to leave a Starbucks in Tempe, Arizona, and told them that another customer did not feel safe in their presence.
The incident took place on July 4th, Independence Day, just before the six Tempe officers began a long shift. The barista told the officers that they either had to leave the sight of the complaining client, or leave completely, as this client did not feel comfortable, according to ABC15 Arizona. The officers, who had just bought their coffees, chose to leave.
The next morning, the Officers Union Tempe Officers Association tweeted a parodic image of the Starbucks logo that said "Dump Starbucks" with a message about the incident. The tweet said, "Do not appreciate that @Starbucks asks our cops #Tempe to leave your establishment on # 4thofjuly2019.Many of these cops are #Veterans who fought for this country! #ZeroRespect."
The Tempe Officers Association issued a statement stating, "This treatment of public security officers can not be more discouraging." Although the barista was polite, making such a request was shocking. too common in 2019. We know it's not a national policy at Starbucks Corporate and we look forward to working with them on this important dialogue. "
A Starbucks representative said the company was still trying to gather details about what transpired specifically on Thursday.
"We have a deep respect for the Tempe police and their services to the community, we have been in touch with the Tempe Police Department and the Tempe Officers Association to better understand what has happened and what has happened. We want all customers in our stores to feel welcome and the incident described is not an indication of what we want our customers to experience in our stores, "said a statement.
