"We're both going to the doctor, we've been vomiting since 8 am Dave has diarrhea, my hands are numb, we're going to text as soon as we can," she told her father, Marc Calanog , on a WhatsApp message.
Paul and her husband David became ill while they were on vacation in Fiji at the end of last month and died a few days apart. South Pacific Island health officials are investigating the deaths of the Texan couple, with the help of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
"We just got back from the clinic, they gave us fluids and an anti-nausea flow," said Calanog, said his daughter on another message. "They gave us electrolyte sachets and anti-nausea pills, we still do not feel 100%, we will rest in our room."
But their illnesses have rapidly escalated.
After the death of his daughter, Calanog asked his son-in-law to take care of himself, because Michelle was already in a better place. He died two days later.
Calanog said that they still did not know what had happened to his daughter and son-in-law and that he and his family were concentrating on taking care of his 2-year-old grandson.
The Fiji Ministry of Health has stated that investigations into the causes of death are ongoing. He said the flu was excluded.
"And at this point, we do not think there is any risk to the public.It would be premature to speculate further on the cause of death until the investigation is over", said the ministry.
The deaths were confirmed by a US State Department official, who said in a statement that US authorities "were closely monitoring" the investigation.
The Fijian ministry said it was also working with the country's scientific police department and the World Health Organization to determine the cause of death.
The couple died during the Memorial Day weekend, reported the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Their families are currently working with US authorities to repatriate their remains.
