A male tiger attacked and injured a coach at a Kansas Zoo Saturday morning, officials said. The attack was reported around 9:30 am at Topeka Zoo and the victim was transported to a local hospital.
The zoo was open at the time of the attack and others saw it. Town of Topeka spokeswoman Molly Hadfield said the zoo was closed for 45 minutes but had reopened.
Hadfield said the staff had placed the Sanjiv tiger in a waiting area and that the tigers would not be exposed for the rest of the day.
The coach, whose name was not revealed, was in serious or critical condition. She was alert and awake when she was transported to the hospital, according to Hadfield.
According to the zoo's Facebook page, Sanjiv was reportedly transferred from Akron Zoo to Topeka in 2017.
