LAS VEGAS (KTNV) – The safety of vampire-style facials is provoking growing concern after two people may have contracted HIV in a New Mexico spa.
Health officials in this state are investigating this case and contacting other clients who may have been affected.

According to a New Mexico health official, a spa client might be exposed to the "face care of a vampire".
Over the last four years, Thomas Pulice, owner of Las Vegas Aesthetics, estimated that he had performed over a thousand facials and vampire facials and had even trained other health care professionals in the procedure .
But, he adds that it is essential that customers do due diligence.
"You do not hunt for bargains with your face," said Pulice. "You would never do a Groupon heart operation, you would not do it, you'd never think about doing it, why would you want to trade for his face that's exposed to people every day?"
Pulice also stated that there were several important things to watch for when buying a vampire facial:
-The level of experience and training of the health professional and the equipment used.
-When the board is certified, medical professionals capable of vampire facials are medical assistants, nurse practitioners, cosmetic surgeons and dermatologists.
Dr. Daliah Wachs, a local family doctor, said the New Mexico spa had probably made one of two mistakes.
"The two main sources are that they used the blood of someone else and that this one was injected to them or that they used the patient's blood, but that it was a contaminated needle, "she said.
However, says Pulice, when a certified health professional completes the procedure correctly, the benefits of the face can include a decrease in fine lines, wrinkles, acne scars, puffiness and discoloration.
