The Post's surveillance video shows when a masked gunman opened fire on New York police officers on a Brooklyn street early Monday morning, unleashing a savage shootout with cops that ended by the death of the shooter.

The gunman was seen spinning from the police while on a police car on Howard Avenue, near Dumont Avenue in Brownsville, at approximately 2:30 am, according to the sequence.

The suspect then pulls a handgun from the back belt and presses the cops for at least one round.

One of the agents on board the car comes out and fires, returning the suspect at least four times.

The masked gunman – identified by sources like Brandon Clayton – avoided the cops after the initial shooting, but was found about half an hour later in a backyard of Howard Avenue, said Terence Monahan, chief from the NYPD Department, at a press conference after the shooting.

While police responded to the backyard, the suspect launched a series of shots in their direction, police said.

"Our officers fought back and the man was then arrested," Monahan told the press conference.

The gunman was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A semi-automatic handgun was found at the scene.

Monahan said the investigators were still scrutinizing the crime scene, but he estimated that the police fired more than 50 shots during the shooting.

He congratulated the cops for their courage.

"The excellent work done by our police today shows, once again, how much they do not hesitate to take significant risks to ensure the safety of our city," said the chief.
