WARRENTON, Oregon – A high school freshman has died of flu-related illness over the weekend, the Warrenton School District announced Monday.

The student, identified as Tim Pior, died Sunday (March 10) from flu and pneumonia, said Warrenton High School principal Rod Heyen.

The Oregon Health Authority flu report last Saturday indicated there were no infant deaths due to the flu, but 138 people had been hospitalized.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Oregon is one of the states experiencing the highest level of influenza activity.

CDC officials have received reports of 64 infant flu deaths across the country since the start of the 2018-2019 influenza season.

Warrenton schools will have counselors and a room for students affected by Pior's death.
