A woman in New York City who pushed an employee to death in front of a subway was sentenced to 20 years in prison for life.

Melanie Liverpool was sentenced Friday for driving out 49-year-old Connie Watton from a subway platform at the Times Square metro station in 2016.

Liverpool pleaded guilty to the murder last month.

Defense attorney Aaron Wallenstein told the Associated Press that Liverpool had remorse but intended to appeal the sentence.

He called the case "tragedy, no matter how you look at it."

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus R. Vance Jr. condemned the murder as an "unwarranted crime".
