A Texas girl is fighting for her life after being infected with a deadly amoeba after a day spent swimming in a river, reports said.

Lily Mae Avant, 10, went swimming during the Labor Day weekend in the Brazos River, near Waco, where doctors think she caught the fatal Naegleria fowleri amoeba, reported the chain KWTX-TV.

A few days after his swim, Valley Mills Elementary School student began having fever and headaches, according to the resort.

Although she seemed to be suffering from the symptoms of a common virus, her family said that she still thought that "something was not going well," according to a Facebook page created to support Lily. .

Then one night, Lily's mother heard noises coming from her daughter's room.

"She was inconsistent, did not answer, and was quickly swept away and taken to the emergency room," said the page.

Lily was then flown to Cook's child health care system in Forth Worth, where a lumbar puncture revealed that she had contracted nægleriosis, a rare infection caused by the amoeba.
