The Rams have yet to face the Cardinals in 2020. That means, this season the Rams have yet to face quarterback Kyler Murray.

Rams defensive tackle Aaron Donald rose to the challenge of facing a player like Murray at a press conference Thursday.

“Well he’s a good football player who can do a lot,” Donald said of Murray. “Obviously you play a lot of quarterbacks in this mobile league, but he definitely has much faster contractions and can do things. So you just have to rush, contain the gap, don’t get up on the ground, don’t leave the rush routes open to the point where you can climb up and have a choice of running or passing. We know what to do because we play a lot of mobile quarterbacks. We have two, we have him and Russell Wilson in our division. So we kind of know how to deal with that, we just have to make sure we’re rushing in the right direction and being a breach sound. . . .

“I think Murray is probably a little more nervous [that Wilson]. He’s a good football player. We’ve played a lot of good quarterbacks and mobile guys that you know what to expect, how to rush against them and what you need to do to try and bottle them, we just have to go out there and execute it. “

Murray, according to Donald’s assessment, has improved since last year.

“You can just see he’s playing more confident, feeling a little more comfortable in his sophomore year,” Donald said. “He’s playing better football than he was last year, and he has a few good guys around who help him as well. We have our hands full, but we will prepare for the challenge and be ready.

Donald would rather not have to be ready for the challenge presented by a mobile quarterback.

“Well, I think anyone rushing the passer would say they’d rather have a quarterback who’s just going to just sit there,” Donald said. “You get a clean run and you think you have it, then he could turn and shake things up with his feet, then you have to chase him all day. But, that’s just the way the league is now, so I have to adapt to it.

Donald naturally didn’t want to go too deep into the details of Murray’s approach to bottling, based on a film study.

“We’ve seen a lot of things, I’m not going to sit here and tell you what we saw,” Donald said. “Buy, you study cinema, you sit with your coaches, they see certain things and you talk about certain things. You have a game plan that you have against a team and you have to go for it. Hopefully they stick with what we’ve been watching. Obviously, they’re going to be throwing things that we don’t expect, and that’s only part of the game, but they prepare you the best way they know how to prepare. So much so that on Sunday you are now able to play at a high level, play fast, do what you do and do whatever you can to take out some things to the point where we can win.

The Cardinals have lost two in a row since the Murray Hail game almost three weeks ago. At 6-5, they need to stay one step ahead of teams like the Vikings and 49ers, both of whom are 5-6 and are in the hunt for the No.7 seed.
