The story that enters the final of today's series is the pitching match. Not only did James Paxton and Justus Sheffield play for the team they faced, but they were also traded. This does not happen every day. However, as it happens so much more often, the Yankees' offensive eclipsed this reality.
The Yankees scored seven points on 11 hits as they won a 7-3 win and a sweep of the series in Seattle. DJ LeMahieu, Aaron Judge and Sanchez scored six of the seven innings. All had at least two hits on that day. When these three players play well, the Yankees are a tough team to beat, and that proved the case in this game.
The Yankees quickly attacked former teammate Sheffield. After removing the first two batters of the match, Gleyber Torres managed an infield single. Gary Sanchez then followed by erasing a 434-foot ball. It took him 30 home runs for the season and gave the Yankees a quick lead.
Paxton started well, eliminating the first eight batters he faced, but Seattle started coming back after that. In the fourth with two outs, Paxton released a walk to Austin Nola. Kyle Seager followed with a two-point home run, evening the game.
It would not be long before this equality was broken. Mike Ford opened fifth with a home run. A double of Tyler Wade then rocked the formation up, and these guys proceeded to do what they are known for. The first was LeMahieu, who distinguished, picked up another RBI and hit with the runners in goal position. She also eliminated Sheffield from the game after five points and only 4.1 innings. The judge then followed with a home run, giving the Yankees a good cushion they would never give up.
Paxton did not return to the next round and finished his day after five. He finished the day with two points allowed on one shot. His main problem was the walks, as he published five the same day. He surpassed the man for whom he was traded and was not bad, but it was not as good as his performance against the Dodgers or some other recent outings.
The Yankees clinched a new insurance race when LeMahieu dominated the race in ninth place, giving them an impressive 70 races in August. In relief from Paxton, Chad Green, Adam Ottavino and Cory Gearrin have combined their efforts to complete the last four innings, allowing only one point, two steps and two hits. More importantly for Gearrin, no balks were called either. The only negative point that comes out of this game is that Gio Urshela had to leave with a tightness in the groin.
This officially marks the end of West Coast baseball for the Yankees in 2019. The furthest they will be going to in the rest of the regular season is Texas. The sleeping habits of those of us on the East Coast are grateful.
