A man was arrested Sunday morning in the shooting death of University of Utah student and football player Aaron Lowe, Salt Lake City Police Chief Mike Brown said.
Buk M. Buk, 22, was arrested in Draper and then jailed in Salt Lake County Jail on charges of aggravated murder, attempted murder and felony firearm discharge.
Lowe was shot on September 26 while attending a party at a residence located at 2215 S. Broadmoor Street (2625 East) in a Sugar House neighborhood. A 20-year-old woman was also seriously injured by gunshot wounds. The woman has undergone major surgery and remains in critical condition, according to Brown.
Buk’s arrest comes a week after Lowe’s death, with the Salt Lake SWAT team executing search warrants in Layton and Draper, Brown said. More than twenty interviews were carried out.
During the investigation, police contacted people on social media who attended the house party and witnessed the events. The chief said it was likely that “several of these people have photos and videos that could help solve this homicide,” and asked them to contact authorities.
“When needed, we turned to our community. We asked people to come forward and share the information they had. Due to this advice and the relentless pursuit of justice from our homicide detectives, we arrested the person charged with the murder of Aaron Lowe, ”Brown said in a statement.
“So many lives have been affected by this senseless shooting. I want to thank the work of our patrollers, detectives, criminal lab technicians, our data analysts and the professional staff of the Salt Lake City Police Department. Their dedicated work. combing through every track and every piece of evidence is what led us to this arrest. “
