The Cincinnati Bengals led 21-7 with the ball in their own half after a punt in the third quarter of the Minnesota Vikings. Up to this point, the Bengals had the momentum, potentially entering the fourth quarter with two scores.
Cincinnati took over on the 21st with Joe Burrow immediately sacked, bringing them back to their own 13. A nice dart to Ja’Marr Chase returned 15 of those yards. The Bengals had a 4th and 1 alone 30.
Zac Taylor went there. It was a mind-boggling move as Taylor could have forced a Vikings attack that had totaled just seven points in over 35 minutes to travel the length of the pitch.
It was not what he had chosen to do. Instead, he made a move that turned Twitter on and likely still would have drawn criticism even if it had worked. Taylor shoved Mixon through his guts, and he was drunk.
Four games later, it was a one-scoring game. The Vikings eventually forced overtime, and while the Bengals managed to grab a fumble and dry for a basket, Taylor’s mistake won’t be forgotten.
That said, Taylor spoke about it after the spectacular overtime victory, supporting his decision. He also commented on his aggressiveness, saying the team are not going to sit idly by and let the game come back to them.
Taylor: “I don’t take decisions.” He said he was going to redo his play call, that he was not happy with it.

Understanding the magnitude of the mistake, Twitter was not happy that many of them tore Taylor apart for his decision making in the Bengals’ opener. However, the Bengals’ victory saved everything for the third-year head coach.

Taylor did his best, wanting to show some faith in an offense that worked well. In this case, it just wasn’t the right decision and almost cost the team the game. Live and learn.
