The stage is set for Saturday’s ACC tournament championship game as No.4 seed Georgia Tech wins their first conference tournament title since 1993 against No.2 seed Florida State after a Friday. dramatic for a tournament that has been hit hard by COVID-19 protocols.
With No.1 seed Virginia pulled from the range due to a positive COVID-19 test on Friday morning, the ACC tournament semi-final was just one game away. That game that was played managed to deliver as the Seminoles claimed a 69-66 victory over the No.6 seed from North Carolina.
After getting a double bye in the tournament and then ousting quarterfinal opponent Duke by a COVID-19 issue, Florida State was playing for the first time this week after what amounted to a triple bye. In contrast, the Tar Heels were playing their third game in three days. Still, UNC seemed to still have plenty of energy in the second half as they recovered from a 35-24 halftime deficit.
In the end, the Seminoles survived as center Balsa Koprivica scored 10 of his game-high 17 points in the second half against the deep well of UNC quality big men. The win should help the Seminoles regain some of the momentum lost in a thwarted loss at Notre Dame that cost FSU a regular season title last Saturday.
