Booker, D-N.J., Said Trump was pleased with an economic recovery initiated under his predecessor, President Barack Obama. He added that Trump had enacted a tax law that gave most of its benefits to the wealthiest Americans.
"For whom is this economy going to work?" Said Booker. "We have to make sure that it is a shared recovery because at the moment, it is certainly not the case".
Booker said the presidential campaign should not be a fight against Trump, but another view of voters. He said he became Mayor of Newark by giving residents a reason to vote for him, not just by voting against his opponent.
"I did it on people," he said. "We pushed a whole new electorate out and we won."
He said civil rights protesters in Alabama had not used the same tactics as Birmingham Public Security Commissioner Bull Connor, who fought against integration.
"I know Donald Trump wants us to try to fight him on his ground and his conditions," said Booker. "What we need now is more than that. We did not beat Bull Connor by bringing bigger dogs and more fire hoses. We have won this by expanding the moral imagination of this whole country about who we are and who we need to move forward. "
Booker is behind in opinion polls and fundraising, although he has met the criteria of both categories to qualify for next month's Miami presidential debate. The latest average opinion poll conducted by Real Clear Politics ranks seventh at 2.5%.
