BOSTON – Acting Boston Mayor Kim Janey announced on Saturday afternoon that she was approving Michelle Wu for Boston mayor just weeks before residents made their final decision and voted on.

Mayor Janey says she calls Wu the best candidate to build on her own record of fairness and justice. Wu and Janey have both had previous partnerships together on issues related to transit justice, fairness in municipal contracts, and housing stability.

“The challenges facing Boston today require strong leadership. Over the past six months, I have worked with the people of our city to fight the Covid-19 pandemic, keep people in their homes, get our kids back to school and make our neighborhoods safer. We cannot let this work go in vain, which is why I endorse Michelle Wu as mayor. Important policies like our housing program, the equitable distribution of vaccines and how we deal with mental health crises are at stake in this election. Additionally, black and brown residents who are most affected by systemic inequalities need a leader at city hall who will center equity and inclusion in all of its policies, and ensure that they have a seat at the table when real decisions are made. I have worked closely with Michelle Wu in city council, and I think she is the candidate with the dossier and the values to not only protect the progress we have made, but rely on them to create a city. more equitable, just, and resilient ”

This follows the victory of Boston city councilors Michelle Wu and Annissa Essaibi George earlier this month after defeating Janey, City Councilor Andrea Campbell and John Barros, the city’s former chief economic development officer in the preliminary election for mayor of Boston.

“I am honored and grateful to have the support of my friend, colleague and sister on duty, Mayor Kim Janey. Over the past six months and long before, she has taken on our city’s greatest challenges, fighting for better schools, affordable housing and racial justice. She has moved our city forward through overlapping crises, always through the prism of fairness, justice and joy. I know we will continue to partner with the most pressing challenges Boston faces and fight for a future that includes all of our families. “
