Additive for chewing gum linked to colorectal cancer

One study indicates that a food additive commonly used as a bleaching agent in products such as chewing gum and mayonnaise could cause inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer.

The study in mice investigated the health effects of
food additive E171 (nanoparticles of titanium dioxide) commonly used in
high amounts in foods and some drugs as a bleaching agent.

Present in more than 900 food products, the E171 is consumed in
high daily proportion of the general population. Food consumption
containing E171 has an impact on the gut microbiota – defined by billions
bacteria that inhabit the gut – which could trigger diseases such as
Inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer, said the study published in
Frontiers in Nutrition.

"It is well established that dietary composition has a
impact on physiology and health, but the role of food additives is hardly
", said WojciechChrzanowski, co-lead author, associate professor
at the University of Sydney.

"This study presents essential evidence that
E171 food additive consumption affects the gut microbiota as
inflammation in the intestine, which can lead to diseases such as
Inflammatory bowel diseases and colorectal cancer, "he said.
