NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WTVF) – Starting Tuesday, adults 70 years of age or older can register to receive a COVID-19 vaccine in Tennessee.
The Tennessee Department of Health said the state is now receiving an increased supply of vaccine doses, allowing more Tennesseans to have access to a vaccine. The ministry expects to receive about 93,000 doses this week, which is a 15% increase from the previous weekly amount.
Previously, the vaccine was offered to healthcare workers, long-term care residents, first responders, and residents 75 years of age or older. TDH estimates that there are around 300,000 Tennesseans who fall in the 70 to 74 age group.
The announcement means that counties may begin offering doses to the population aged 70 to 74, but larger counties in Tennessee may not be ready to offer it to this population due to supply. Residents of metropolitan Tennessee counties such as Davidson County should check with their local health department about plans for vaccine distribution.
TDH said its COVID-19 vaccination plan prioritizes high-risk populations, and people aged 70 to 74 have a 70% higher death rate and 40% hospitalization rate from the virus higher than those aged 65 to 69. hopes to start offering vaccines to people aged 65 and over as early as March, according to supply.
