The Awesome Adventures of Captain Spirit is a short and charming but often dark narrative game by DONTNOD Entertainment (the creators behind the original life ] Life is Strange ) which acts as an autonomous prequelle of the next life is Strange 2 .
The game takes place on a lazy Saturday morning at a snowy Beaver Creek home, a fictional little town in Oregon (the same US state all previous Life is Strange games were located) where we follow Chris, the ten-year-old protagonist, and his adventures as Captain Spirit, an alter-ego superhero of his own creation who helps him cope with his often difficult circumstances.
[19659006] Chris's mother, with whom he was very close, recently pbaded away and complicating things his father turned to alcohol to numb his overwhelming sorrow.
I must admit that at first I was skeptical as to Captain Spirit . The E3 trailer made a bit of a cringe and I was not sure that playing with a playful story as a pre-teen would be something I liked. But the game turned out to be a lot darker than I had imagined, plunging into a range of mature themes such as alcoholism, grief and loss, L & # 39; masterful use of juxtaposition by DONTNOD also did a remarkable job in developing Chris's character and I really felt that I could see the world from the eyes of this young child. From insightful dialogue, and even the timeless lack of it, to the mannerisms seen in the animations, Chris was relatable and credible, and an interesting vehicle with which to explore the story of Captain Spirit .
The Adventures of Captain Spirit are mostly parallel to Chris' reality, with a few moments plunging you into an imaginary world, such as Captain L & Spirit overwhelmingly subjugating a monster (or rather lighting up the heating in the boiler room).
While the story focuses on Chris and his struggles, there is a handful of clues that suggest a much larger story. Whether it's an article about unexplained gunfire, the strange circumstances surrounding Chris's mother's death, or the intriguing conclusion of this story, it's clear that DONTNOD weaves a complex tale filled with a another good dose of twists.
Considering their previous work, I personally think that they are one of the most exciting and daring developers of narrative titles [.]
Captain Spirit has a slower and more offbeat pace than the previous ones Life is Strange and also adopts a less linear approach, director Michel Koch calling it a "Narrative sandbox". Because of this, the game can make you feel slightly lost sometimes in relation to the more scripted and controlled approach of Life is Strange and Before the Storm .
The game begins with Chris sitting at his desk and adding the finishing touch to his drawing of the eponymous Captain Spirit, giving you the opportunity to adapt the superhero to your liking. Will Captain Spirit wear a helmet or mask? Will her outfit be bright and colorful or dark and intimidating? Although this may seem like simple aesthetic changes, your choices here will also influence the behavior of Captain Spirit
After that, you will need to complete a list of "Great Things to do, "like collect all the items for your superhero costume or defeat the evil Snowmancer (a snowman in the garden), and it's up to you to decide who comes first. Some special actions, denoted by a colorful and animated display of text, will allow you to interact with the world as a Spirit Captain. This usually leads to the display of Captain Spirit's powers, such as turning on the TV with telekinesis (or rather the remote control hidden behind Chris's back).
In all honesty though, you do not need to accomplish any of the goals but it is important to note that the decisions you make and the actions you take will be reported to Life is Strange 2 . Like its predecessors, the game involves discovering a story and, along the way, you will discover a series of additional narrative elements that relate to the larger universe of Life is Strange. If you are an avid fan of the series, Captain Spirit boasts a plethora of highly intriguing suggestions and nods to previous games and the coming sequel . So take your time and explore, I promise you will not regret it.
One thing that shows from the outset is the use by DONTNOD of a much larger number. gaming engine capable, namely the Unreal Engine 4 (as opposed to the previously used Unreal Engine 3). The graphics are sharper, the textures more realistic, the animations more fluid and, above all, the game offers a considerably more advanced lighting, that the developers used for a nice effect throughout the game.
and there was times when my PC-GTX 960 2 GB and 8 GB of reasonably powerful RAM have struggled to keep up. Considering that the game world is small enough and not necessarily a gaming marvel, it looks more like poor optimization than demanding graphics. I've also sometimes received errors (which have sent me back to the office) as Unreal error reports and warnings regarding my lack of video memory. That being said, fortunately, the game never really crashed and it was more of a minor inconvenience than a gambling problem.
TL; DR
The Impressive Adventures of Captain Spirit is an endearing and well-crafted entry into the world of Life is Strange which poses a very intriguing starting point for the next Life is Strange 2 . Admittedly, for me, it was not as captivating as its predecessors because of its offbeat narrative approach and open narrative sandbox approach. But with that being said, Captain Spirit still possesses a poignant and powerfully telling story, emphasizing the dedication of his creators to the development of truly human and stimulating narratives.
Beyond its ambiguous narrative elements, the designers also designed a detailed, atmospheric and remarkably beautiful scenery, be it the dreamy and tranquil snowy landscape of Beaver Creek or the fantastic world of Captain Spirit's adventures
Life is Strange 2 will be released for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on September 27, 2018.
