WASHINGTON: Half of adults in the United States are trying to lose weight, according to a study released Thursday night, with more women than men seeking to lose weight lose a few pounds.
The National Health and Nutrition Survey, conducted from 2013 to 2016, found that 49.1% of Americans aged 20 and over had tried to lose weight in the last 12 months.
A higher percentage of women – 56% – had tried to lose weight than men – 42 percent. Nearly six in ten women aged 40 to 59 reported trying to lose weight. Nearly 40% of the US population was considered obese in 2015-2016, a figure that climbs to 70% if it includes overweight people.
The survey found that it was not just overweight people who were looking to lose weight. . A quarter of the respondents who had normal weight or even underweight had tried to lose weight. The study found that the most common methods for losing weight were to exercise and eat less food.
