THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Department of Prisons and Correctional Services of the State decided to imitate the Telangana prison tourism model, which will give the general public an experience of life in prisons.

The program is scheduled in the compound of the Viyyur Central Prison in Thrissur, where a prison museum is also planned. According to sources from Viyyur Prison, the "Prison Experience" program is inspired by a similar initiative launched at Telangana in 2016.

The idea of the prison museum is evoked with multiple objectives. Among these, there is the fact of sending a message giving first-hand experience that a prison is not a nice place and that crimes should be avoided at all cost. It also aims to promote an adventure life, awareness about the history of the prison and the promotion of tourism.

"Upon payment of a prescribed fee, a person may live a life in jail for 24 hours. This will include wearing prison uniforms, having food in jail and disposing of minimum facilities that are available for real prisoners, "said a senior officer at Viyyur Central Prison. However, they will have no interaction with the real detainees.

The proposal worth Rs 6 crore awaits the final government approval. The sources added that they expect Rs 3 crore this fiscal year, with which the museum and facilities for "prison experience" can be launched. The prison museum will present various gadgets from the colonial era used in prison and in documents.

"Inmates" will not be allowed to carry gadgets, including mobile phones, inside the prison. In addition, families will not be allowed to stay together.

Citizens must pay 500 rupees per head per night for this adventure in the Sangareddy Colonial Prison in Telangana, where a 220-year-old prison was turned into a prison project.
