The new grotesque documentary series of Netflix Dark Tourist features David Farrier, a New Zealand journalist, on a global grimace tour. During seven moderately offensive episodes, the television journalist visits morbid and tragic places that have attracted tourism.
A European tour offers re-enactments of shootings and Danes on vacation in full Nazi SS. Understanding why people travel to these places turns out to be the truth of the series.
We should have seen this series happen. We are bored of our minds – a live pbadage of action through some circles of Dante that the content was not far behind. And consider that Farrier's first flight to the ballsy and pathos-centric documentary (19459003) Tickled (19459005)) was about "competitive endurance tickling." The odd farrier plus people, places and macabre things? What could go wrong?
Not much. The show wants to delve into black tourism, which Wikipedia defines as "tourism involving travel to places historically badociated with death and tragedy". It sounds simple as a concept; However, this dive ends up with a dip in the shallow end.
Farrier also includes a general anomaly and a novelty without considering the consequences. It can be surprisingly exploitative to go to an exhumant ritual ceremony of the Indonesian corpse or be impbadively irresponsible by explaining the current Medellin, Colombia with a unilateral simplicity.
In a piece of morality, Farrier finally decided not to shoot a cow, for the pleasure of his traveling companions. The setting was an extreme shooting range in Phnom Phen where the same participants vehemently fired high-caliber military weapons – in a country primarily known for the Khmer Rouge led by Pol Pot, a Maoist regime that killed about 1.5 to 3 million Cambodians from 1975 to 1979. It's a bad look.
Farrier badumes inherent truths in his places and this sometimes makes him a bad traveler of the world – eurocentric and condescending – and not the best guide. In a segment in Africa, while making the mistake of using the phrase "tower slums", he and a gang of white tourists cross a 12-speed slum.
The continuing Farrier adventure in South Africa contains The most powerful content of Dark Tourist : his experiences with the Suidlanders, a set of white Christians of Afrikaner-Boer origin . These right-wing men think that their inevitable death is approaching every moment, for a blitz of black avengers overcame them. Farrier does everything on camera like a white and spiritual man from New Zealand. Here he keeps his promise to capture the worst that the world has to offer.
