What is LDAC?

LDAC is a lossy audio codec developed by Sony for use in Bluetooth devices. It was launched with Android Oreo as part of the AOSP and has a much higher bitrate than was previously possible with Bluetooth audio. You can transfer audio data at a rate of 990kbps, high enough to listen to music. Granted, LDAC is only really useful for streaming lossless music, but it's still an interesting addition to Xiaomi phones. Will you need to stream music to a Bluetooth speaker? Probably not. And that's the other problem – you need a wireless technology that supports LDAC. Most helmets are not, because it is a technology reserved for some high-end helmets. LDAC is better than aptX from Qualcomm, and even better than aptX HD. The regular aptX peaks at a bit rate of 352 kbps, while the HD increases to 576 kbps. True, aptX is considered to be low latency, and it's probably something that it has on LDAC.

For regular music listeners, however, none of these options are of importance. Most of the files you will listen will be at a bitrate of 320kbps, like mp3 files. FLAC is where this particular technology shines because any CD rips you take yourself and convert to FLAC will probably not exceed 920kbps. This is a great addition for audiophiles, but no one else will really benefit too much. It's great to see Xiaomi pull the features of the AOSP, especially when they do not have to.
