Ariel Atom 4 brings Civic Type R power to the light car

The Ariel Motor Company has completely redesigned its minimalist, track-centric toy, in what the automaker describes as the largest overhaul since the launch of the Atom in 1999. Ariel Atom 4 is almost entirely new, with only the clutch and brake Pedals and tank cap of the latest model

As always, the Atom 4 is an ultra-sleek tubular frame machine. The chbadis is entirely new, with a larger diameter tube that would improve the torsional stiffness by 15% compared to the old Atom 3.5 . In addition, the interior room has improved, with an additional length of 1.9 inches and 1.2 inches in width in the cabin. Ariel also says that crash-test performance has improved significantly.

One of the most exciting changes is installed behind the seats, where the Atom 4 uses the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine from the last Honda Civic Type R . Using a custom engine controller, the mill is rated for 320 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed manual gearbox transmits power to the rear wheels by means of a limited slip differential. Key figures: 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.8 seconds; 0 to 100 mph in 6.8 seconds; and a maximum speed of 162 mph. The total weight claimed is surprisingly low of 1,312 pounds – that's less than half the weight of the clbadic R-type sedan.

The entire body of the Atom – which bodywork – has been redesigned. Notably, the big roll hoop has been removed, so there is a much smaller air intake above the seats. A redesigned wind deflector is said to help support, as do the new wings. Overall, the aerodynamic drag is down while the airflow to the engine and the intercooler has increased. At the same time, Ariel says that the new aerodynamics helps give the Atom 4 a more "neutral" maneuverability.

Speaking of maneuverability, the Atom 4 still uses a pushrod type suspension, but a new geometry is meant to reduce squatting and diving. Bilstein dampers are standard, Ohlins being offered as an option. A new rack also enhances the steering radius of the car. The wheels measure 16 inches in diameter at the front and 17 inches at the rear, shod with Avon ZZR performance tires. Ariel engineers have also installed larger brakes than the latest Atom, with even larger AP Racing units available as an option

An interesting change is that Ariel has designed the Atom 4 to receive the 39; European approval (under the Small Series approval rules). can more easily be sold in more countries across the continent. Among the changes to meet these rules are new switchgear, new lighting with LED position lights and even automatic headlamps. Each Atom 4 will be badembled by a technician and commissioned, with the company planning to build about 100 per year. In the United States, the Atom 4 will continue to be licensed by Ariel North America in Virginia.

All told, the Ariel Atom 4 seeks to improve its already impressive performance, while enhancing the livability and ease of use. Production begins towards the end of this year with the first deliveries scheduled for spring 2019.
