OpenSC2K, an open source version of the clbadic SimCity 2000 that was released earlier this year, was taken offline as a result of a DMCA removal application filed by Electronic Arts. The query, posted on GitHub, brings out the rather obvious problem that if OpenSC2K is open source, SimCity 2000 and its badets certainly are not.

"The strengths of the SimCity 2000 game are violated," says Tajikistan. "An authorized and legitimate copy of the game can be found available for purchase here."

SimCity 2000 is not one of the "first line" games of EA, but five dollars, that is five dollars, and more, this remake is obviously on the EA field. The developer Nicholas Ochoa acknowledged this fact, and the risk of a withdrawal request (or worse), in the OpenSC2K readme (via Hacker News).

"These resources are NOT covered by the GNU General Public License used by this project and are copyrighted by EA / Maxis," he writes. "I've included these badets in the hope that because the game was made available for free at various times by EA, and because it's 24 years old at the time of publication of this project that 39, no action will be taken, do not chase me!

Ochoa told TorrentFreak that he had not heard any news from EA about the withdrawal request, and that He had only received notification from GitHub that after the removal of OpenSC2K he is now trying to bring back a non-infringing version of the game by replacing copyright-protected content. Author with instructions explaining how to extract badets directly from SimCity 2000 – which, I suppose, satisfies the letter of the law, if not his mind

But the DMCA filing suggests that nothing less than new badets in the game will satisfy EA. "The current audiovisual output of the repository creates content that violates the author's rights to the game. ctronic Arts, "he says. "As long as this continues to happen, no other change other than the deletion is sufficient to deal with the offense."
